⚡ NEC Notes:🔸 210.52(C)(2) Peninsular Countertops

Sharpen your knowledge with a quick dive into the NEC.

📘 What NEC 210.52(C)(2) Peninsular Countertops

What it says:
At least one receptacle outlet shall be installed at each peninsular countertop space with a long dimension of 24 inches or greater and a short dimension of 12 inches or greater. The receptacle outlet shall be located not more than 24 inches from the outer end of the peninsula.

Why it matters:

  • Safety first: Countertop receptacles reduce the need for extension cords in kitchens, which are a major tripping and fire hazard.

  • Convenience: Most small appliances (blenders, coffee makers, toasters) are used on countertops. A receptacle at the end of a peninsula ensures they can be plugged in without running cords across sinks or cooktops.

  • Code compliance = inspection pass: Inspectors check for these locations because they are a common miss in rough-in. Not having one can delay project closeout.

  • Standardization: This rule ensures homeowners and users always have access to power in every usable counter space, especially isolated peninsulas.

💡 Pro Tip: When roughing in, measure from the base cabinet edge, not just the countertop overhang. If the peninsula sticks out 24 inches or more, plan the box at the far end right away. It’s easier to rough one in early than to core drill and fish wires later when cabinets and stone are in place.

❓ Question:
When does a peninsular countertop require a receptacle outlet?

A) Always, no matter the size
B) Only if the long dimension is 24 inches or more and the short dimension is 12 inches or more
C) Only if appliances will be used on it
D) Only if it is attached to an island

Answer below 👇

🧠 Think it through – You’re wiring a new kitchen. The homeowner wants a peninsula that’s 30" long and 15" wide.

  • Does this trigger the receptacle requirement?

  • Where would you place the outlet to stay within code?

  • What’s the risk if you skip it and the inspector catches it after countertops are installed?

Answer: B — A receptacle is required when the peninsula measures at least 24" in length and 12" in width, and it must be located within 24" of the outer end.
