⚡ Code Corner:🔸 NEC 404.8(A) – Mounting Height for Switches

Sharpen your knowledge with a quick dive into the NEC.

📘 What it says:

Switches must be mounted in readily accessible locations and not more than 6 ft 7 in. (2.0 m) above the floor to the center of the grip of the operating handle.

Why it matters:
Even small voltage differences around a pool can be dangerous. Bonding keeps everything at the same electrical potential—a critical safety measure in wet environments.

💡 Pro Tip: Always measure to the center of the handle, not the box.
If you're roughing in a switch, mark 46" above finished floor (AFF) as a rule of thumb. That centers most toggle-style switches around 48" AFF—well within code and in line with typical ADA guidelines (which recommend 48" max for forward reach).

❓ Quick Code Quiz

Choose the correct answer:

Question:
You’re installing a light switch in a corridor. What is the maximum height (to center of the handle) you can mount it above the finished floor?

A) 6' 6"
B) 6' 7"
C) 7' 0"
D) No maximum height is required

Answer below 👇

🧠 Think it through – this conductor isn’t for carrying fault current, but to equalize voltage potential across all metal parts in and around the pool.

Answer: B) 6' 7"

NEC 404.8(A) – Height of Switches

“Switches shall be located so that they are readily accessible. They shall be installed so that the center of the grip of the operating handle of the switch, when in its highest position, is not more than 2.0 m (6 ft 7 in.) above the floor or working platform.”
